Возвращаю давний должок. Я обещал поставить метки в выступлении Стивена Майера, где он освещает вопросы распознавания дизайна, с точки зрения науки и философии науки. Правда, я разметил только первую половину беседы, но вторая уже не такая важная, да и не такая интересная. Тезисная часть -- первая.

Майер -- один из лучших дискутантов, сторонников гипотезы дизайна биосферы. Одним из ключевых комментариев в данном выступлении являются его слова о сущности научного знания, которое, согласно Майеру (а он как философ науки артикулирует научный консенсус по данному вопросу), имеет абдуктивную [а не дедуктивную -- mns2012] основу и всегда характеризуется неполнотой и предварительностью.

Что мне не понравилось у ведущего:

• Гиперскептицизм какой-то у него слишком избирательный. До того момента, как он начал нести пургу про грибы, я оправдывал его: ведущий, работа такая, обостряет специально, чтобы интересно было слушать.

• Однако после его химической проповеди про влияние грибов на религиозные переживания (во второй части беседы) серьёзно я уже его не могу воспринимать. Человек, у которого что-то выжжено внутри. Весь наколотый, в студии кругом черепа. Знаете, бывают такие дедушки -- борода до колен, а ума не нажил... Ездят у нас тут такие на мотоциклах. Когда такое с подростком, это ещё понятно, но когда тебе уже хорошо за, это похоже на диагноз. Сначала я думал, что он умный человек, теперь я склоняюсь к тому, что он просто умничает.

Что мне не понравилось у Майера:

• Он выглядел слабовато в прямой полемике по вопросам веры. Отчасти это результат его мягкости. Отчасти потому, что там, где надо было просто привлечь авторитет Церкви, он, понятное дело, не будучи членом Церкви, не мог этого сделать. Дело в том, что верить каждый волен во что угодно, хоть в то, что вселенная вылупилась из мирового яйца, но аутентичное Христианство в лице Церкви говорит так-то и так-то. Следовало также напомнить о том, что Бог будет судить каждого. Вот и всё, что нужно было сказать в ответах на подобные вопросы. А дальше что хотят, пусть то и делают с этой информацией.


• Ведущего с его грибами надо было просто систематически ставить на место. Сколько бы человек ни говорил о сознании и прочих вещах, если он утверждает, что сознание определяется [NB не коррелирует, а именно определяется -- mns2012] химией, то он материалист. А материалистов ставить на место следует демонстрацией необходимости введения логики дополнительно к движению материи. Потому что если материя -- это всё, что есть, без попадания в порочный круг невозможно обосновать логику, которой они нелегитимно пользуются как данностью. Обосновывать логику материалист обязан только через движение материи и никак иначе. Однако прежде чем обосновывать что-то чем-то, нужна логика, которую им-то и нужно обосновать. Это классический порочный круг.


• Логика заключается во введении отношения "X об Y", а материя лишена этого, с чем согласны и сами натуралисты:

  Логика (даже нечёткая) предполагает не просто наличие физических сигналов где-нибудь в коре головного мозга, но и необходимость рассматривать содержимое мыслительного процесса, так сказать мысли о мыслях. Поэтому материализм неадекватен при рассмотрении феномена сознания, субъективных переживаний, и даже мыслительного процесса как такового, несмотря на то, что физический аспект мышления коренится в материальном мире.

The argument from epistemological necessity. The reliability of the human mind. Hume's vicious circle of radical empiricism: we cannot justify the reliability of our assumptions by observing the world, because we have to use those assumptions to make sense of the observations. Theism has a solution in the form of the intelligibility of the world, i.e. of the correspondence between the world made by a benevolent Creator and our created minds endowed with the rational faculty to make sense of it.

The foundational assumption behind modern science is the intelligibility of the world. Naturally occurring patterns in the created world can be understood by humans created by and in the image of the same God, who created the world and built lawful intelligible order into it.

Meyer's stance on evolution: evolution does occur but he is skeptical of its ability to produce all biological diversity now observed, especially by random mutations coupled with natural selection. The idea that the first organisms appeared spontaneously from non-living chemicals is not credible either. Explanatory deficits of Darwinian evolution. Why?

• Novelty (new anatomical functions, new cell types) cannot just be attributed to RV+NS over eons of time. Novelty requires code. Code does not come about by random symbol changes and selection over time. Statistically overwhelmingly, this way code degrades long before new function can arise. Dan Tofik's work is cited.


• Developmental gene regulatory networks regulate the cell differentiation process during the body development. Eric Davidson (CalTech) et al. Signaling pathways to tell the genome what parts of it should be expressed when. The functional relationships involved look like integrated circuits. You can't have a new form of animal unless you have a new developmental gene regulatory network in place. The problem for Darwinian evolution is that, as Davidson discovered, these networks cannot be altered significantly without shutting down the animal development process. From electrical engineering and other engineering disciplines, the constraints principle is that the more tightly a system is integrated, the harder it is to perturb any of its parts without complete destruction of the system, at which point no evolution is possible.

"You are not your brain" by UCLA psychiatrist Jeffrey Schwartz. 1925 Clarence Darrow case set the precedent for leniency in US law, where the court decision was in favor of the diminished responsibility plea in a murder case towards the perpetrators because they had been evolutionarily forced to commit the crime.

Question: we think of humans as individuals but they are dependent upon others, zoom out and the same is true about our planet, the Solar system, the galaxy, and the universe. Could it be that the universe created itself, or can the universe itself be a god?

There are multiple views. Every belief system has to answer the foundational questions such as what is the ground of being (the primitive) from which everything else came etc. A few lines of scientific evidence exists that point in the direction of classical theism (there being a transcendent God who created the universe and upholds it). E.g. the universe did in fact have a beginning, so it is not eternal or self-existing. The theistic narrative gains a lot more weight in the wake of our recent scientific discoveries.

Evidence pointing towards the hypothesis that the universe had a beginning. All claims we make are always provisional, it is all we can do. Terrence McKenna: science wants you to believe that it's all about measurement and reason if you allow it one miracle.

Multiverse. Fred Hoyle. Why so much carbon in the universe? Fine tuning as a hallmark of design. Polkinghorn. Fine tuning and a Fine Tuner vs multiverse. Why the theistic explanation is better. For the multiverse argument to work there has to be a causal connection between the universes otherwise nothing that happens in other universes affects our own and we can't sum up the probabilities across the ensemble (because there is none in this case). To solve that problem, the multiverse proponents assume some sort of universe generator. But this does not really solve the problem because the generator itself must be fine tuned to produce a fine tuned result.

Life is the discernable functional end of extremely improbable functional systems observed in the universe: function is coextensive with life.

All scientific explanations are provisional irrespective of ID. Life has significance vs non-life. What about subjectivity of this observation?

This is objective: It is a discernable functional outcome unique in the observable universe.

Rationale behind inference to design (bank robbery example using a digital vault) statistical support of the inference. Improbable event of a functional outcome significant on the gamut of the unguided interactions in the observable universe justifies inference to design. In this case, design is a calculably more probable theory than function arising by random chance.

Overwhelmingly, our expectation based on naturalism is a lifeless universe. Conversely, the "inside job" robbery cracking of the vault, or the expectation based on theism in light of fine tuning, is that we would get something as complex as life in the universe.

Philosophy behind design inference. Attempts at absolute proofs of God's existence vs fideism, mathematical proofs and physics. Either extreme is unsatisfactory. But there exists the middle way, i.e. abductive inference to the best explanation. Science is not built on deductive proof, science is always provisional. In science we have reason to believe certain things based on evidence that we observe. Strong provisional weight, beyond reasonable doubt, based on what we know, in support of theism. Belief in God makes sense in that sense. Strong reasons for faith but not absolute proof.

Далее мне стало уже не особенно интересно. Обсуждение пошло вкось, в чём виноват ведущий, который хотел вырулить на то, что всякая вера имеет химическую основу и что, по его мнению, к таким же альтруистическим установкам, как в Христианстве, пришел какой-то фрик, объевшийся грибов.
